RIYL: Citizen, By Surprise
Nothing but a good time from these four dudes from Cowtown. Pizza Bath is a kick ass quartet that have punchy, punk rock sound. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Sean Hamilton, guitarist/vocalist Eric Andrews Svilpis, bassist/vocalist Gavin Howard and drummer Fergie McLean the band conjures some killer punk tunes that aren’t just dudes with rolling bass lines and bullshit lyrics that mean nothing.
From an interview published via Beatroute, Hamilton stated, ““The goals and values of Pizza Bath stem from the lyrical content. We wanted to be fun and goofy, but then have a much darker message in our portrayal of what life means and what our role in the world is. What we try and promote through our lyrics and real life actions is just a willingness to become better; in everything we are and through all of our failures. We want to grow and learn be the best versions of ourselves with each new experience.”
This comes through as well. Each song is replete with earnestness – and when paired with some rad musicianship, you get a does of reality with a raucous good time. Of course, since Hamilton writes and sings about some of the heavier existentialist shit we have to deal with, it can be a heavy listen for some. That said, he sheds light on the fact that sometimes we’re just making it through and it’s okay to not be okay.
What is enjoyable is that despite how heavy the message can be, it’s still a fun listen. The songs have a great tempo, the drumming is frenetic and spastic at some points, and the bass is great in all the ways you expect it to be. Songs like “Fire” also have a great way of providing different textures as well. The bridges that allude to piano pieces work well, and the complete sonic shift around 2:50 give the ear a pleasant surprise as well.
Ultimately, in a music climate that is overshadowed by a lot of fuzz rock, it’s nice to get a straight ahead punk rock record. Killer tunes, doodz.
