Sometimes, there are bands that release gobs of records. Other times, you get an EP, and that’s all you get. That’s where we’re currently at with the band Boats. Their three track EP Sessions released today and it is fantastic.

While only three tracks, the band, who have conceded zero information on their Bandcamp page (other than their current locale), are a kick in the feels, in the best way. Pure emo-driven pop punk, each track pulls on heart strings, much like all the elder statesman of the genre.

EP track leader and title track, “Boats” has a bit of that Yellowcard vibe to it. There are bright guitars, and polyrhythmic drums. There are heartfelt vocals and lyricism about getting lost in one’s own head. This song seems as if it’s purely about introspection, and allows the listener to get lost in their thoughts, just like the vocalist.

The follow up tracks “Warm” and “Balcony” carry the same aesthetic as “Boats,” but try different techniques sonically. The former, is lyrically vague, but carries a lot of weight when looking at the affect we have on others. The latter, is more deeply rooted in that emo-aesthetic, but carries some coolest guitar-work on the EP.

Conclusively, if you are looking for some alternative emo rock tunes, this will be for you. Rooted in influences like Jimmy Eat World, the aforementioned Yellowcard, and genre elders Knapsack, Boats from Sessions is a good peek into what we might hear from the band’s full length. While the EP is short, the replayability is high!
